Growing up in Massachusetts (Chelmsford), we knew that June meant a few things, the end of another school year, graduations, Father's Day and STRAWBERRY SEASON!
I can still remember piling into the car to go to a nearby farm to go pick strawberries. An hour later we would return to the car, our faces and clothes stained from the inevitable strawberry that somehow ended up in our mouths and not the bucket (OK more than one) and our faces burnt by the sun that ripened these delicious red berries. On the way home, we would argue over who picked the most or who picked the biggest strawberry and sit in anticipation of what came next - strawberry shortcake with whipped cream!
It also meant strawberry festivals! Just like April brought on apple blossom festivals and October, apple and pumpkin festivals, the coming of June meant strawberry festivals. Throughout Massachusetts you would find local farms, churches or other organizations celebrating spring with a strawberry festival.
These delicious yearly rituals meant summer had finally arrived, no matter what the calendar or weather man said. (They were all weather men back then.)
So to celebrate the Strawberry Moon and Strawberry Season; below you will find a list of some of the area's Strawberry Festivals.
